John Southworth and Your Housing Group worked collaboratively on this scheme to deliver the refurbishment and conversion of a dilapidated former Post Office and butcher’s unit in Leigh. Being in such a bad state of repair, extensive work was required on this challenging refurbishment.

Located on St. Helen’s Road, Leigh, the focus was to split the properties into four self-contained units consisting of two first-floor residential apartments and two ground-floor commercial units, with associated parking and external spaces at the rear.

This disused building, left open to the elements for years, showed signs of water ingress upon initial inspection and required fully gutting prior to the full rebuild of the front elevation and renewal of the roof coverings to make it watertight. This was just one of the many issues with the property which included structural repairs and replacement of the unstable floors.

Externally, the front elevation was rebuilt with a new insulated cavity wall for energy efficiency, which was rendered and painted on completion and new windows, doors and shopfronts fitted. Internally the renovation of this empty shell continued with new stairs, floors, acoustic and thermal improvements before replastering and decoration.

The property looks vastly different now, we are sure you will agree!
