John Southworth and Bury Council worked collaboratively on this highly unusual re-development, delivering twelve, purpose-built amenity dwellings and management block, in replacement of the existing, overcrowded site.

Developed in 1992, the existing Fernhill Gypsy & Traveller site had been originally set out with 17 pitches. Not meeting current design and safety standards, the space was tight and did not allow sufficient spacing between tourers and caravans. Many of the existing residents had lived on the site since it was built however the site had become outdated, showing signs of age.

The purpose-built site, located approximately one mile from Bury town centre was re-designed to provide a much-improved residential community for the families, following guidance from the Gypsy & Traveller Site Good Practice Guide.

And the result? New, larger, amenity dwellings with combined kitchen/dining spaces, living areas and accessible bathrooms. Located outside, the parking areas accommodate enough space for a tourer, static caravan and two cars on each pitch.
