In the heart of Openshaw, East Manchester, John Southworth is leading the Brigham Street development, creating 24 new homes for One Manchester. This includes 20 timber-frame houses and an apartment block built with a lightweight metal frame construction. Designed with sustainability in mind, both construction types support low-carbon processes and offer enhanced thermal insulation, contributing to energy-efficient living.
Project highlights
Located in a residential area, the site prioritises respect for the community and the environment, achieving top ratings from the Considerate Constructors Scheme (15/15 in all categories).
Community Respect and Engagement: The team is actively involved with the Openshaw community, providing regular newsletters every six weeks to update neighbours on construction progress. In addition, they have donated over 200 volunteer hours to clean and improve nearby Salt Street, enhancing local public spaces for everyone to enjoy.
Environmental Care: The commitment to green practices extends to all site operations, with construction methods focusing on minimising environmental impact. Soft landscaping will enhance the aesthetic and ecological value around the new homes, with a target of achieving net-zero carbon.
Workforce Value: The project emphasises workforce development, with apprenticeships and training programs to support new talent. Notable achievements include Theo, a trainee site manager who has recently commenced his Site Manager Apprenticeship at Salford university, and a female bricklaying apprentice who has secured a full-time role.
Social value achievements
The development’s comprehensive Social Values Plan is already surpassing financial targets, showing exceptional progress across seven key themes. Initiatives include partnerships with Tameside College for apprenticeships, presentations promoting careers in construction at Cedar Mount and Wright Robinson colleges, and ongoing support for women in construction.
Safety and Well-being
Health and safety standards remain a priority, with regular audits from a dedicated Health & Safety Advisor and a newly appointed Health & Safety Manager to foster a proactive approach to worker well-being. Initiatives include healthy living advice, access to fresh fruit in the canteen, and structured safety procedures.
