Neighbouring Project
Lathbury Road
Task
Community Support
Background
While working on our Lathbury Road development in Harpurhey, we’ve been getting to know some of the people and organisations in the surrounding community.
Keeping our supply chain and materials local wherever possible is already an important part of how we work, but we also like to see where else we can lend a hand while we’re in an area.
This time, that included getting stuck in at a local community garden, supporting a charity fundraiser and creating an opportunity for the next generation of construction workers.
Chippenham Road Community Gardens
Just around the corner from our development, volunteers have been meeting at Chippenham Road Community Gardens every week since August 2024. The garden brings people of all ages together to grow flowers, vegetables and herbs, learn new skills and, of course, have a chat over a cup of tea!
The volunteers had plans to give the garden a bit of a revamp, with a new potting shed, footpaths and planting beds on the wish list. Before any of that could happen, however, there was some clearing to do. Our team stepped in to remove the old, rotting timber sleepers and move soil around the site, leaving what was needed for future planting and giving the volunteers a clearer space to get started on their plans.
Willow Wood Hospice
We were also happy to support Willow Wood Hospice with its annual Bunny Hop fundraiser. Each year, schools, nurseries and children’s groups across Tameside put on their bunny ears and complete a sponsored hop to raise money for the hospice. Willow Wood put out an appeal for Crème Eggs to give to the children taking part, so we answered with a w-hopping 300 eggs!
Supporting the next generation
We’re also proud to have taken on a Bricklaying Apprentice on the development, giving them the chance to gain practical experience on a live construction site while learning their trade. Supporting apprentices is an important part of John Southworth Foundations, helping bring new people into construction and develop the skills our industry will need in the future.
